Social Unit of Dogs and Humans.
Dogs can live perfectly happy lives surrounded by humans and about 40% of dog owners identify their dogs as a family member reflecting social compatibility between our two species.
Although dogs and wolves’ have been separated for 100,000 years, they maintain certain social behaviors we see daily, such as:
· They are territorial. (barking and warning humans)
· They hunt cooperatively. (following human around looking for food and treats)
· They are emotionally bonded and greet each other enthusiastically.
Dogs are astute readers of human body language. Our four-legged family members have the uncanny ability to predict what we will do. For example, if we are leaving, dogs will retreat under a table or sit quietly preparing to rest. Some pups will go into a crate hoping for a special treat. Although some may demonstrate anxiety or fear, most will sleep comfortably waiting for your return.
Dogs are attuned to the emotional state of the owners and express remorse when they are upset or sad. Dogs have the capacity to show affection, unconditionally, to their beloved human pack member. Dogs may sit with you in the stay position waiting for your attention and they do not mind waiting. They may try to pet you letting you know they are there no matter what happened, dogs do not care what you did, they only want you to know, they are happy you are home.
Lastly, dogs function as human alarm systems, trackers and hunting aides, garbage disposal facilities, and child guardians and playmates. In return, humans provide dogs with two of the most important primal requirements, food, and shelter. Once a dog trusts this, they will forever be your loyal companion.
